Is It Hard To Learn Piano?

Many people would love to be able to play the piano but they are understandably intimidated. Indeed, it can seem like a monumental task to learn an entire instrument from scratch, especially if you’re going the self-taught route. If you are starting your piano journey as an adult, it can feel like your brain is slow to pick up on the ideas and patterns necessary to play the piano properly. Generally, children learn much faster than adults, but that doesn’t mean that you CAN’T learn the piano. You may just need to put in a little extra effort. But there’s nothing wrong with that! It’ll pay off big time if you have the patience and work ethic.

So is it hard to learn the piano or not? Well, obviously it will take lots of practice. It’s easy to learn basic chords and scales. But developing dexterity in the fingers, learning the right and left hands separately and then putting them together, and building knowledge on music theory all take a lot of time. Not to mention, if you don’t know how to read music, you’ll likely need to put a lot of time into developing that skill as well, unless you plan on learning based on ear training and improvisation.

The type of music you want to play also makes a difference in how difficult learning piano can be.
